After a successful career working in public hospitals, Shigemi Hirata was getting bored with retirement. A friend asked Shigemi to go to a pottery show with him. He fell in love with the works of art that he saw there. Therefore, he decided to enroll in college at the age of 85 to study pottery. It took him 11 years to finish his degree. He was 96 years old when he finished.

Bertie Gladwin

Bertie Gladwin always felt that he made a mistake when he dropped out of school when he was 14 years old. Therefore, after retirement, he decided to go back to school despite having a very successful British military career. He graduated with a master’s degree when he was 90 years old. He hopes to earn his doctorate before he is 100.

Doreetha Daniels

Doreetha Daniels spent her life taking care of others. When her services as a caregiver were no longer needed, she decided to go back to school. While she was studying, she had several strokes that claimed most of her sight. Despite this setback, she graduated at the age of 99 with an associate’s degree.

Nola Ochs

Getting married was more important to Nola Ochs than school in 1930, so she dropped out. When her youngest granddaughter was ready to start college, Nola decided to go with her. She graduated with a master’s degree at the age of 98. At the age of 100, she decided to write a book. She passed away in December 2016.

Wally Taibleson

When Wally retired, his wife asked him what he was going to do with all his free time. He told her that he was going to school. He was 70 years old and had never taken a college course. At the age of 90, he earned his fourth degree.
