Healthy Fall Foods for Seniors and Older Adults

For seniors and older adults, eating a healthy diet can contribute to better mental clarity, resistance to disease and illnesses and higher levels of energy. With a better diet, seniors can also enjoy a more positive and healthier outlook on life. As a leading provider of senior care in Columbus, we know the importance of a healthy diet for our clients and wanted to share some of our favorite fall foods that promote total health for older adults.

  • Pumpkin – Cold and flu season is here. If you’re looking to protect your immune system and fight off the common cold, you may want to think about adding pumpkin to your diet. Full of fiber, vitamin C and beta-carotene, pumpkins can aid in weight loss because they keep you feeling full longer. The phytosterols in the seeds of the pumpkin can also reduce the body’s bad cholesterol levels.
  • Grapes – Green, red, concord or black, grapes are the ideal fall snack for seniors. The juicy treats are a great source of vitamins K, B6, C and A. The key nutrients in grapes can help treat problems such as kidney disorders, diabetes, and the prevention of cataracts. They can also improve the body’s blood flow.
  • Pears – One of the most overlooked fruits of the fall season is the pear. From Anjou and Bartlett to the Starkrimson and Bosc, pears are a valuable source of nutrients for older adults. Pears are loaded with vitamin C, which is crucial in helping keep a healthy colon. Since they contain approximately 25 percent of the required daily fiber intake, pears also help prevent constipation. Pears are also great energy boosters.
  • Sweet Potatoes – Similar to pumpkins, sweet potatoes can pack a powerful healthy punch to your dinner plate. High in vitamins C, D and B6, sweet potatoes can be beneficial in building strong bones. The vitamins and minerals can also play a key role in healing wounds and helping the skin to retain its youthful appearance.
